These are probably the most terrifing pictures I've ever seen. The sheer power of this is just mind boggling. Mother nature is really playing up recently. I fear there is going to be more casualties than the tsunami of a few years ago.

Shocked Shocked Shocked

Effing hell! Feel for anyone involved in that!

I think you're right about casualties. As horrific as the Indonesian (??) Tsunami was, it was at a beach resort so there wasn't as much of a built up area as there is here.

That is as you say terrifying indeed. What's going on with the planet? Have we really reached the tipping point?

Never seen that film, but watching the news over the last 12 months I don't need too..

Earthquakes, Tsunami's, Uprisings against oppressive regimes. A very unstable time indeed...

One of my best mates wife is from Japan...called him this morning to find out if her family are ok. Would seem they are which is blessing...

West Coast of the USA is to be hit you say? That is not good. Lets hope it either doesn't happen, or by the time it reaches the West Coast it's faded away...

I'm good...

was shocked to hear what has been going on when I get in late last night...

Southern California is braced and ready for the first of 2 waves the largest to be about 7 ft...So it will cause flooding but they are not evacuating which is good. My brother lives a block from the beach in Ventura so he is keeping me updated and the coast gaurd said they are safe to stay.....

The warning for California is farther North from us so I am grateful for that and praying for everyone to just get through this so safely. Those poor people in Japan....that earthquake lasted for 5 min!!!!! I can't even fathum what that was like and I've been through a huge one.....

At least Japan is prepared for quakes. What with one of the strictest building codes going and Japanese efficiency they seem to have averted major loss of life and buildings collapsing.

Just watched some footage of people queueing up orderly to buy their supplies in a shop that's in virtual darkness because of power cuts. Can you imaging that happening here ?? All the chavs would be rushing in grabbing what they could and running out again !!

Oh dear. Looks like the early reports of no major loss of life were a bit premature. Truely shocking pictures.

Well, Japan has been well and truely hammered. Just as well they have high building codes or this could have been so much worse. Seems it's the tsunami that caused most of the damage and been responcible for most of the deaths.

But, yes, that nuclear power plant looks to be in trouble. Let's hope they manage to control it. Just goes to show though that no matter what you plan for sometimes you just can't plan for the unexpected.

Ditto.

There is one thing that I do like about the UK...we are not on a fault line and our natural disasters pale in comparisom to others around the world. Yes, we have flooding, and I don't mean to down playing the effects that this has had on those it affected, but I have not seen entire buildings being flattened by tsunamis and 10,000 people unaccounted for in one area alone.

There was an earthquake in the West Midlands a few years ago and a few roof tiles fell off. Christchurch gets flattened.

Not really comparable.
