So. The 44th President of the USA has been inaugarated. I notice theres a few people from the US on here. What are you opinions today. How do you feel?

Gotta say watching his speech yesterday I was very impressed by him...hope he can do what he wants to and make amends for Georgie's time...

I have really enjoyed watching all of the festivities.

He is a really good speaker and I think he has a way of moving people.
Talk all aside there is only so much he can do so hopefully others will get up off their butts and change themselves and not exspect a miracle from someone who still has to deal with congress!

For the first time in a long time, I'm actually excited about our new President.

I don't follow politics as much as I should, but all I knew was that I didn't want another Republican in office. No offense to anyone who is, but I find it odd that the last two Presidencies that had a Republican in office (Bush Sr. & GW... hmmmm something to ponder) the economy was driven into the shitter. This is the worst I've seen it since the late 70's. Yeah, I know... we had a Democrat in office back then.

While I don't expect a miracle, I really hope Obama can turn things around and restore some of the faith lost in our government.

Lately the political scandals in Chicago have been quite embarrassing!! Sad

I have family members who campaigned for Obama and some who would never have voted for him in a million years. We try and respect each others opinions and basically we just don't "go there" at family functions. silent

On a personal level......I am all about peace and unity. There is definitely hope for both. We sure could all use a change and that has sort of been the theme. cheer

From a Brits point of view America has actually damaged itself in the eyes of the world since Bush came to power. Obama seems to actually want to reverse the damage and pull America up out of the mess it has got itself into. He is very charismatic and is saying all the right things without a doubt. I just hope he gets the backing he needs to make the changes come to fruition and is allowed the time to do it.

You can't change 8 years of Bush's lunacy overnight.

Didn't Bush go from one the highest rated Presidents in polls to THE lowest in the space of like 9 months or something? Now that's some achievement!!!

It was prolly a little longer than 9 months but's who's counting cyclops

A lot of folks were high on Bush (or maybe just high??) after the way he initially handled 9/11. His rating at the time was at a near all-time high. But, it seemed like every step he took after that was met with criticism & usually for good reason.

When it's all said & done his legacy will be that of perhaps the WORST US president of all-time. Now that's some achievement!!

Some of the damage was done while Clinton was in office too. I just think it came to light in Bush's presidency. As far as Obama, I hope he can do what he says he WANTS to do...if he is willing to take on all of the damage, then more power to him. I pray to God he pulls through too.

Considering the influence the USA has on just about every aspect of the world these days he pretty much has to! Not a burden I'd like on my shoulders.

As an American, what would you like to see tackled first? The US economy? Iraq? Osama/Taliban? Relations with Iran? Or something else? Would be good to actually hear an American citizens opinion instead of a politians.

Oh wow. Im not really into politics, but I would have to say the economy is crucial. We can work on the other stuff in the background. People are losing jobs here left and right. The unemployment rate is pretty sad. I keep hearing that unemployment benefits are going to run out...then what do these people do?
Im sorry to say, but there are some greedy motherf***ers here that have caused this mess. All they wanted to do was line their pockets with more money and didnt give 2 shits about who/what they hurt. Seriously. They saw dollar signs and went into a frenzy. People losing their houses, jobs, all of their life savings....all because a certain few wanted to get richer...all the while some people are basically living in poverty now and the guilty are living in their in their $20 million dollar houses....
Dont get me started...Im already getting mad!!
Another thing. Oil prices have dropped but gas prices are getting higher??? Why? Because the oil dudes want more money....whatever.

Sorry if I offended anyone...just venting.

I hear you Mary! Very similar situation over here. Everyday there's more job loses, must have been around 3,000 lost the other week alone. That's a lot of families. Thing is in the UK unemployment benefit doesn't run out, but for a single person you only get £56 per week (around $80). You can get other benefits to help you out but in reality if you have a mortgage, credit card bills and all that you are going to be in SERIOUS trouble. But of course the more people on benefits the more taxes the workers have to pay. The monies gotta come from somewhere.

So what about all you other US citizens...what are your thoughts? Seriously, I'd really like to know the views of real Americans...the people on the street.

On a lighter note Mary1234 & Chrissy...I LOVE your avatars!!!! Very classy!!!... Very Happy

Since you asked:

I think yes! GWB could of done things differently and who knows we could still be in the same spot. Ultimetly though I get really tired of people blaming just one person when he doesn't have that much control! Our congress is the ones who vote these bills into effect. I think one of the reasons our new president has a chance is the american people as a whole seem willing to make some changes. But its going to take a long while and people need to do there part. Not just today but for years to come!

i have always found it interesting that in a lot of cases and not all of course with our housing industry and the current mortgage crisis people are so easy to blame the banks and companys that made these loans available and even blame the president when they are the one who signed these loans without knowing what they were doing on houses that they knew they could not afford and most went onto furnish these houses and park new cars in those driveways but its everyone elses fault but them.

The saddest thing is the poor people who have lost their retirement and everything else to the greed of Wall street and their insurers. Funny to me that these companys are the least regulated in the world. Wonder why? Because politicians sit on their boards and get direct deposit dividends to their accounts. But Congress handed over all that money and it really didn't shore up too much. But when the big three auto makers went looking for some help they were ripped over the coals and their industry is the most heavily regulated out there. As a people we need to make sure our workers and their familys are feed and housed that our seniors are warm and comfortable and our military are honored. Who gives a shit about a bonus package or reward vacation when your neighbor can't feed their family.

You want my opinion. Everyone needs to stop pointing fingers at everyone else and look at themselves. Stop being greedy and help someone out who needs it. Keep putting money into our economy and keep people working and show some respect to those fighting to protect our ass-sets even if we are not in the same opinion as to why they are there!

Change starts at home!

Chrissy...thanks for that. Some very interesting and valid points in there.

Don't know about over there, but here because the banks themselves are having major problems they are using a clause in mortgage contracts and calling in the outstanding amounts on mortgages early. Then when the mortgagees can't pay back the outstanding amount are repossesing their homes...just so the banks can make some money. No thought for the family they've just made homeless. The Govn stood up and have put things in place to try and stop this, but it should never have been allowed in the first place. Point being it isn't all down to people overstretching themselves. These are people who have been paying their payments but the banks just want their money back. Though I agree some people have just taken out loans left, right & centre and have dug a hole for themselves.

On the whole though it is the banks that have screwed up and it's the man in the street that is suffering.

I like what you say about looking after your own and the elderly and wholeheartedly agree about the pricks who are getting their bonuses while people are losing their homes, can't feed themselves an all.

I'm finding this really interesting...keep those opinions n views comin!!!

Same sh*t over here RFFB. Here's your lead story on Yahoo today: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090126/ap_on_bi_ge/economy

This guy comes in & immediately announces forthcoming tax cuts yet starts spending like he's a women on a shopping spree @ Louis Vuitton happy boy
He announces another stimulus package handout (last one was a failure btw.....), set's an unrealistic time line withdrawal from Iraq & now announces an immediate troop increase in Afghanistan?? The guys been in office for a fuggin week & he's already got Upscope in a hissy.....

Seriously, you want to jump start the economy?? How bout instead of bailing out the auto industry & the credit card company's.....you know the same people that have gotten rich by conning their own people....yeah that's right, instead of slinging billions their way why don't you divide that UP & distribute it to the American taxpayers?? You want the economy moving??

Try this out for size. If that 700 billion that was used to bailout the auto industry was instead used as a stimulus package to the American taxpayers than each would receive a check for $225,000 bouncy boy1 You want to see an economy move?? Put $225,000 in Upscope's mailbox!!!
You want to see foreclosures stop?? Cars payed off?? Vacations?? Department stores packed?? Restaurants full?? Movie theaters sold out. Stocks bought?? Bonds?? IRA's?? Aggressive 401K?? Tourism helping out other countries?? Casinos booming?? In other words, you want to move an economy, bail out it's consumers not the fugging crooked auto industry!!

The US economy effects the whole world. It is the #1 priority at this time.
