Totally agree. He sounds better as he gets older. He stopped growling and grunting and actually started to use his voice. One of the only things I like about the Crazy Nights album is Genes vocals!
He actually has a good voice and his 78 solo album shows how versatile he can be.
TBH, I always liked Gene's voice, whatever era, and it's just as well he hasn't lost his voice like a certain other member of KISS.
