TBH, I'm not really convinced that the 'Snake of today really have anything to with the 'Snake of old other than Mr Coverdale himself. The sound of Whitesnake is still heavily aimed at the US market but as that's where he had his real major success in the mid 80's I can see why. But personally I miss the bluesy sound of old. I remember a quote from DC many years ago when he asked Jon Lord how he got his keyboard sound as DC had failed to find another keyboard player who sounded the same. Jon Lord's reply was 'That's the sound of a Hammond organ'. Now DC has one of those generic keyboard players that sound like every keyboard in every other band and look like it is made out of Mechano!
And that, to me, is where today's 'Snake fall down. They sound like every other band out there! They don't 'stand out' in a crowd.
Having got that of my chest(!) there is no doubt these boys can play and do what they do very well. The new song 'Forevermore' was simply fantastic and the set was goin very well. Until after 45mins we got what has to the worst guitar solo(s) I have heard. 15 mins of Doug, then Reb, then Doug, then Reb then both!!! If you closed your eyes you wouldn't have known they were swapping the stage! And then it was follwed by a 10 min drum solo!!!!!! 25 mins out of a show in solos is not appreciated!!! Could have had another 5 songs in that time...
Really thought DC had lost the momentum but was I wrong! Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City (highlight for me of the show), Fool For Your Lovin & Still Of The Night kickin things back in well n proper!
It has been 29 yrs (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) since I last saw Whitesnake and it was good to catch up with them again.
Lastly tho, I have to mention Mr Coverdale himself. Bare chested showing a very heavy deep tan on his chest and neck...and a face a completely different shade!!!! HOW MUCH FOUNDATION WAS HE WEARING!!!!! But best of all was his teeth! If anyone has seen the episode of 'Friends' when Ross gets his teeth whitened...well, no exaggeration it was that bad! He looks like a cross between Alice Cooper, Farrah Fawcett & Dee Snider with Ross's teeth! And how does sing without movin his top lip? He still has that old English sexist innuendo humour about him...declaring he's just been "Licking some honey out" backstage then goin to ask why do we get that throat cough/tickle in our throats afterwards!!! Good ol' Dave! Stuck in the 70's!!!
And that to me was actually good to see, cos that told me the old Whitesnake is still there!!
