| The driver involved has now resigned... http://menmedia.co.uk/macclesfieldexpress/news/s/1417841_devastated-crash--bus-driver-quits - Quote :
- The driver of the bus which lost its roof under a bridge has resigned in protest.
The mum-of-two, who doesn’t wish to be named, says she still suffers nightmares about the moment the number 21 smashed into the Silk Road railway bridge in Macclesfield last month.
But she claims her bosses at Arriva should never have made her drive a two-decker and feels she’s been used as a scapegoat for the accident, which left two men with head injuries.
The driver, who has worked the route for five years, said: "The normal bus had braking problems, which I’d been telling them about for days – I’d nearly had an accident in it the day before.
"I think it was dangerous. They listened to me at the last minute and gave me the double-decker. I told them I was uncomfortable with it and mentioned the bridge."
She added that she was distracted by the rush-hour traffic.
She added: "I was concentrating so hard on the the road I just forgot – it was strange, there was no impact it just sliced right through and by the time I realised it was too late."
Helping her customers off the bus and dialling 999, she realised the true extent of the damage.
She said: "The two men who were upstairs looked terrible – they were just covered in blood.
"Passers-by were brushing glass off them. I saw them again at hospital and they asked if I was okay."
The Express carried an interview with the men last week.
The driver, who lives near Macclesfield, says Arriva told her they had been fined £70,000 by the rail company for delays on the railway line while safety checks were done and more for writing off the bus.
She was suspended after the accident but chose to resign. She was expecting to be formally dismissed today (Wednesday).
She said: "My union won’t give me legal support because I’ve only been with them six weeks. After five years it’s very sad. But if feels to me that all Arriva care about is how much money it’s cost them.
"I’ve had a breakdown over this and can’t work for them any more."
A spokeswoman said: "Arriva take the safety of our employees, customers and other road users extremely seriously and we have reporting, testing and maintenance schedules in place to ensure our buses meet all safety requirements.
"We have carried out a full investigation into the incident, and as we are still in the process of communicating with the driver it would not be appropriate to comment further." | |
