I doubt if our transatlantic friends will have heard of JAPAN. I too got to see them at the Lycem, Rainbow and Hammy O. Loved the first 2 albums but drifted away from them when Quiet Life came out and they smoothed out their image. Here's how I like to remember them.

We need to change this to the good-bye bass players thread....Phil Kennemore
Good bye-Kennemore, the bassist of veteran hard-rock group Y&T, died early Friday morning (Jan. 7) of lung cancer, the group's frontman confirmed. Kennemore, 57, passed away at Stanford Hospital in California while surrounded by family members.
Y&T frontman Dave Meniketti, who founded the group with Kennemore, guitarist Joey Alves and drummer Leonard Haze, issued a blog post this morning to confirm the bassist's death and offer a personal tribute.
"As a musician, with those huge fingers, his bass playing was always loud, strong, and deep, filling the largest or smallest of stages equally," Meniketti wrote. "I will miss his sense of humor, his amazing wit, but most of all I will always miss not seeing him to my left on the stages I will play from this moment forward."
Y&T, formerly known as Yesterday and Today, formed in Oakland in 1972 and released their self-titled debut album in 1976. The group found new popularity in the 80s with singles "Mean Streak" and "Summertime Girls" (the latter reaching No. 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985) and toured with artists like AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne and Aerosmith. Y&T released "Facemelter," its first album in 13 years, last May.

Mr Shrubber...I know what you mean about the first 2 albums...they were actually very sleazy, RnR. Reminds me a lot of Bowie & I can hear the influence they had on Hanoi Rocks also (don't know if Hanoi ever admitted to it but it's there) and definately Girl. I believe they were a band before their time musically and image wise, to a point, as The Dolls had kinda already been there.
The albums from Quiet Life on are where I really love them tho. Quiet Life is one of my top albums. It's just a shame that, cos of Ghosts & the 'smoothed out' image you refer to, they got lumbered in the new romantic scene and tag. I think they were so, so much more better than any of the new romantics. Japan's music has real atmosphere, style and quality where most of the new rom stuff was just bands jumping on a bandwagon.
Other than the BOC support act I wish I'd appreciated them sooner and got to see them on one of their own shows. Unfortunately for me if it wasn't full on rock I wasn't intersted at the time.
I'm so happy my tastes changed as I got older...

start your own thread!!
posting Y&T on my Mick/Japan thread...oh dear.
But still, sad news indeed. It's worrying when the bands/muscians you grew up listening to start to depart this earth. As a kid you just feel invincible, as you get older you become more aware of your mortality.

I said much the same thing to Stevie yesterday. But I'm fighting depression on another front at the moment, so I don't really want to go down that dark ally as well !!!
