PostSubject: Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Of All Time   Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums Of All Time I_icon_minitimeSat Jan 24, 2009 7:14 am

As compiled by the staff of Metal Rules.com

Any comments guys?

#1. Metallica - Master of Puppets

Metallica are a band that opened many doors for a lot of fans/bands. They also opened many doors and provided a lot of listeners with a gateway to other more extreme bands. Sadly, much of their material post "the black album" hardly qualifies as heavy metal, but in their prime this band dealt out thrash metal that was second to none! Just listen to "Damage Inc." or "Battery" and even today they still stand up against what has come along.

#2. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast

It is of no surprise that IRON MAIDEN comes close to the top spot. Culling fans from all areas of the metal spectrum, Iron Maiden, clearly are one of the true innovators in heavy metal. The intro to the track "Number of the Beast" has become one of the "prayers" of heavy metal with just about every fan knowing it word for word.

#3. Metallica - Ride the Lightning

Arguably Metallica's heaviest album, the glorious RIDE THE LIGHTNING comes in at #3! This was the album that really started getting Metallica recognized around the world. It was followed up with MASTER OF PUPPETS which is really what put them on the map. However, the impact of RIDE THE LIGHTNING was definitely felt with "hits" like "Fade To Black", and "For Whom The Bell Tolls" to lesser hailed (but equally memorable) tracks like "Escape" and "Creeping Death" .

#4. AC/DC - Back in Black

Some of you youngsters will no doubt say "WTF is a classic rock band doing in a heavy metal list?" It is true that AC/DC has become darlings of the classic rock radio circuit, also their recent performance with the Rolling Stones in Canada to several hundred thousand people only goes to show that their appeal extends well outside of the metal realm. All this aside, that does not mean that their contribution to heavy metal in the 70's and 80's should be ignored! BACK IN BLACK is not only one of the best heavy metal albums of all time, it is also one of the best selling "normal" albums of all time as well!!

#5. Slayer - Reign in Blood

REIGN IN BLOOD is hailed by many as the definitive Slayer album. Clearly most of us here at Metal-Rules.com agree, as the album comes in at #5. As I've said before, listening to this album is like a religious experience. "Angel of Death" is one of the best Slayer songs ever written. The whole album plays like the soundtrack to hell. Learn the sacred words of praise, hail SLAYERRRRRRR!!!

#6. Iron Maiden - Powerslave

Iron Maiden's POWERSLAVE is a monster of an album. After the success of NUMBER OF THE BEAST and its follow up PIECE OF MIND, Iron Maiden was hard pressed to deliver an album that would match its predecessors. They would not disappoint as POWERSLAVE, with its instant classic tracks including "2 Minutes to Midnight" and the epic "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" would cement Iron Maiden at the forefront of the metal world and spawn the massive and seemingly never-ending World Slavery Tour.

#7. Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind

Maiden again? Yes, again...making for the third entry in our top 10! Many people consider this the pinnacle of Maidens career and with tracks like "The Trooper", "Still Life", "Die With Your Boots On" and "Flight of Icarus" it is hard to disagree. Piece of Mind turned 20 years old this year and forever will be a classic of the metal genre.

#8. Dio - Holy Diver

Ex-Rainbow, ex-Sabbath vocal god Ronnie James Dio comes in at #8. Pushing to his 60's, this old goat can still easily kick the ass of the majority of singers on the scene.

#9. Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss

SEASONS IN THE ABYSS is considered by some to be the last "classic" Slayer album. Songs like the evil title track and speed metal masterpieces like "Born of Fire" and "War Ensemble" have become fan favorites standing shoulder to shoulder alongside the band's past material.

#10. Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance

Rounding out the top 10 is SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE, the quintessential Priest album in the eyes of many. Fronted by the “metal god” Rob Halford, Priest have been one of the defining bands of the metal movement. “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming” helped to create a new generation of metalheads and showed to the world that Metal Rules!!

I may get slaughtered for this but 3 Maiden albums in the top 10! taz devil What a joke!!!!

I just don't like Maiden...every song just sounds the same to me...every bad cliche in the book...terrible lyrics...and Bruce D...awful voice...screach, shout, squeal!!!!

I like a few songs, but on the whole...it's a "no!" from me!!

I think I'm in the minority tho!!

Im kinda with you to a point mate,...3 in the top ten, no!!..."Number of the beast" for sure!..PS & POM should be placed in the top 50 somewhere.

I do have big respect for Maiden, but i think they have been flogging a dead horse for the last 15 years..Last good release "Seventh Son" which was 1988 Rolling Eyes

cheers

Yeah, out of all of the Maiden albums 'NOTB' is the one I can sit through without having to be physically restrained and tied down! While I ain't a fan I do respect anyband that keep going for as long, through the thick and thin of the RNR ups and downs, as they have.

While I'm back on about the list...just about every early(ish) Priest album other than 'Sin After Sin!!!!'...what's that all about!!!
All together now...'Sinner, Sinner, Sinner, Sinner, Sinneeeerrrrrrrrrr!!!!!'... Very Happy

Twas the first Priest album I owned and it was a rock revelation to me. Still love it.

Aww, c'mon! Lets rattle some cages!

For me it's most of the euro metal stuff Accept, Mercyful fate, Helloween, King Diamond etc. So much better stuff than these lot. The previously mentioned Maiden! And what is Bruce Dickinson's solo effort doing in there... Rolling Eyes And never even heard of Blind Guardian!!!!

Still it's all down to preference at the end of the day...but at least Priest, Sabbs, Metallica, AC/DC (wot? No 'Powerage'... Shocked scratch ), and even RATT, Motley & KISS got some recognition. It ain't all bad!!...

This list has way too much bias in it. They have true 'metal" bands like Metallica, Priest, Maiden, Slayer, Megadeth, & AC/DC dominating the list.

Then they give token votes to bands like Motley Crue, Dokken, Ratt, Def Leppard, & Van Halen who aren't necessarily metal bands per se.

The accuracy of this list is WAY off.

Upscope will rattle some cages. If you are going to include all the bands of the genre into the list including the so called 'Hair Bands' than there is NO WAY that Metallica has 2 of the top 3 albums of all time.....NONE!!

Got to agree, but I've never understood why why music has to have so many labels in the first place! Hard Rock, Metal, Nu- metal, Black metal, Death metal and all the rest! Isn't music just music?

But yeah for a list that has been defined as 'Metal' none of the bands you mentioned should really be in there!

That's true RFFB. Upscope's not a big fan of labeling the different types of bands either. Hard rock, heavy metal, glam, hair ect.ect. is all one group in 'Scope's eyes. And that is why there is too much bias in this list. Are we to really assume that bands that Upscope has even vaguely heard of like, Dismembor, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, In flames, Kreator have put out top 100 albums when bands like Kiss, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Ratt & Def Leppard are getting snubbed??

Seriously, this list has Led Zeppelin IV as the as the #57 album. In a true world if you were to include Led Zeppelin they would dominate this list w/ many entries.

It's a good read but it would have been more credible if they would have simply left off any bands that are not true "metal."

For arguments sake though based on this list. AC/DC's 'Back In Black' get Upscope's vote for the top. Have you seen the track listing for this album?? Every single song was a monster!! And
GnR - 'Appetite For Destruction' Should be higher as well. True masterpieces both of them.

No arguement from me on either of those points!!!... Very Happy Top albums...proper gritty RnR!!!

You may have read on a post elsewhere my all time top album is KISS 'Destroyer', but is it a 'Metal' album...NO WAY!!!! Yet it made the list!!!! When 'Creatures', 'LIU' & 'Animalize' are far more in the metal vein than 'Destroyer'...not saying they are 'metal' but they've more in common than 'Destroyer has with 'metal'

Some real good views being posted here & i agree with a lot of whats been said..

There is a difference between "Hard Rock" & "Heavy Metal"..Its there to be heard, but as long as there's a distorted guitar riff, hard hitting beats, & some sort of catchy melody / vocals, Mattys happy!!! Very Happy

Yep! But like you said in some other post about some wierd new 'class' or 'style' of metal/rock where will it end!... Rolling Eyes

There is no doubt that for example Journey & Metallica are different styles of music but really what difference is there between Metallica & Slayer/Venom/Motorhead. Not saying they all sound the same but none of them are 100 miles from each other either! Yet they all seem to fall into various catagories. Even the lighter side of rock has it's labels AOR/MOR etc. At the end of the day as The Man himself says (that'd be Lemmy!) "It's all RnR"

No one can ever say it better!

But I agree, Journey?

Lets start our own list of the top 20 make it easy and already avoid fights and put Kiss, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Metallica, in at the top and go from there. One album each and see where it goes. Order doesn't matter I put Kiss first to show some love!

But seeing as you've nicked KISS I'm gonna go for Van Halen - Fair Warning... I love you it!!!
